Weekend away! Inverness + Fort Williams

24-25.09.11 2.5hr train to Inverness - The city of the highlands.

Gaelic - Old celtic language which has it's origin from old irish. It is still spoken in the northern parts of Scotland, with many towns like Fort Williams still have it as a written language used in sign posts.

Inver = Mouth of river

Ness = Name of the river     Thus, Inverness means mouth of river Ness (flows down from Loch Ness)

Did you know?! Loch Ness water is BLACK! Yupp... due some mineral in the soil.. And! The amount of fresh water in Loch Ness is greater than all of the fresh water in England and Wales combined! but still the water's black... so idk if anyone would drink it..

Loch Ness Monster called Nessie was first spotted from 600AD! (I can only vaguely recall, too busy taking pictures than listening to the guide in kilts) By this man who came to convert the people to catholic at Inverness. His servant had to swim across the river to fetch him a boat, and in the river he was attacked by the monster. But the priest held up the cross and ordered the monster back to his home and the monster was never seen again! Or at least by sober people... Twas the story of the monster

Highlights: City walking tour, Cruise Tour (Loch Ness + Urquhart Castle)
Fort Williams is no fort! Just a very small simple town filled with mountain gear shops... not keen to go back there again!

First bank in UK to print their bank name on money so people would come back to them for business!
Oldest bank in Scotland! But now a pub LoL..

Bible versus encrypted upon wall opposite Town House (place where ministers meet and govern town)  because this wealthy citizen got fed up with all the ministers going to and from work drunk. Right next to this wall is the bank (picture above) which is now a pub.. how ironic..
The area dates back to the iron age, where these people known as Picts lived, named because they drew pictures on stones and on walls.

These Statues use to stand on a building overlooking the market place in city but the building was taken down and the statues were offered for free to anyone who would take them. One antique collector guy took them away and 50 years later the council came back to ask if they could have it back and was refused. Few years later the guy died and a different council member came to his daughter and brought back the statue for 50,000 pound.

This guy who use to owned this lovely house (now a hotel) on the side of river Ness was into drug dealing business. But greedy for more wealth, he wanted to expand his business to Hong Kong, but found the shipping costs too expensive, so he started his own shipping company which is now the biggest shipping company in the world!

Hiking. Huge mountain behind so beautiful! Reminds me of Sound of Music.
Think the mountain behind me is Ben Nevis (Ben = mountain) highest mountain in Scotland.

Welcome in English and Gaelic
